Honouring Cree heritage in Mistissini

Due to lack of space, the Adult Education Services Centre in Mistissini, Quebec had been using a local high school facilities, which limited the types of courses it could offer. 

For the new Sabtuan Adult Education Centre, Aquest furnished the entire school to help transform the new learning environment into a space that honors Cree heritage and fosters respect and compassion for adult students. A full needs analysis was taken, as well as test fit plans produced to ensure the space was used in the most efficient and functional way possible.

Details such as ergonomic seating designed for adult use, soft seating to create comfortable lounge nooks, and curved benching to create a beautiful gathering area all helped create a place that fosters learning success. Every area was thought through to take advantage of natural light flowing in through the large windows, as well as to create multiple zones so that students have the flexibility to guide their own learning.  Integrating culturally relevant design elements including real wood seating and important colour schemes helped to create a supportive, inspiring atmosphere – the school now elevates the educational experience and kindles a sense of pride and belonging.

This approach not only helps students set and achieve their personal study goals, but also encourages them in their long term educational journey, showing that their heritage is valued, and their aspirations are supported.

The beautiful new building and carefully furnished spaces will provide students a place to learn and grow for many years to come.
